BASED ESSENTIALLY on the commentaries of Adi Sankara , the author Puranapanda Srinivas has presented a simple, lucid exposition of the ‘Vishnusahasrama Stotra', a hymn containing the thousand names of Lord Vishnu. First the verse is given, then follow the ‘names' figuring in it, their derivative meanings, and so on. In bringing out the inner meanings and esoteric significance of the divine names, he has drawn from other scriptural works such as ‘Adhyatma Ramayana' and buttressed his explanations with quotations from the epics and the Upanishads.
Puranapanda Srinivas points out that, in the ‘Sahasranama', as many as 69 names appear twice; 11, thrice; and two, four times. But each time, the name acquires a different connotation, depending on its contextual placement, and signifies yet another attribute of God. The principle here is the same as what is known in legal parlance as ‘harmonious construction.'
That the very first name, ‘Viswam', heralds and encompasses the rest of the names in the hymn has been explained interestingly. Quite a few names — for example, ‘Kesavah', ‘Shambhu', and ‘Adityah' — have been dealt with in a scholarly manner.
The author deserves commendation for having brought out an extensively researched work, which is comprehensible and spiritually ennobling. The index of names that are believed to fulfill the various kinds of wish of one who chants them, and the alphabetical index with reference to the verses will be of great help to the reader.
